How Data is Powering Advanced Manufacturing in Canada

A little over a year ago, Canada’s Minister of Innovation, Science and Economic Development Navdeep Bains announced the five technology groups that would each get a piece of the federal government’s five-year $950 million Innovation Superclusters Initiative.

The high-tech collaborative strategy aims to foster innovation, spur economic growth and create jobs.

The tech groups include the:

Canada’s Advanced Manufacturing Supercluster, NGen, will receive up to $230 million in funding and create more than 13,500 new jobs in Ontario and across Canada, and add more than $13.5 billion to the economy over 10 years.

To make sure that happens, NGen has chosen Hockeystick to power its transformation of Canada’s advanced manufacturing sector and build its member portal.

As part of our five-year contract with NGen, Hockeystick is building a portal for its members that will include data, news, research and benchmarking functionality specifically designed and curated for them. The portal also includes tools for managing project funding applications and back-office reporting to make project collaboration more integrated and efficient.

This is the first initiative of its kind in Canada, and an ambitious one at that. Superclusters need to get up and running quickly to ensure the biggest impact on their sectors and create good jobs.

Our team’s data expertise and proven track record have allowed NGen to get off the ground quickly to produce a highly visible platform.

“When you are trying to do something original, when you’re looking for a way to push boundaries, you need partners with skills and ambition that match your own,” says Bruce Wallace, Chief Creative Officer of NGen. “Hockeystick has been that partner from the beginning for NGen. They share our vision of data-driven advanced manufacturing in Canada — and of how to get there. Hockeystick’s feature-rich data platform is essential to achieving the supercluster’s goal of a more connected, collaborative manufacturing sector.”

Through its member portal, NGen joins Hockeystick’s extensive ecosystem of member-driven organizations. The Canadian Venture Capital and Private Equity Association, representing 300 private equity and venture capital funds, chose Hockeystick as their exclusive data platform, ISED chose us to power its Business Accelerator and Incubator metrics platform, and both the National Angel Capital Association and the Angel Capital Association partnered with Hockeystick to build their member portals.

This experience translates into a better product for superclusters like NGen, as well as more opportunities for Hockeystick to add value through strategic advice and connections with our other member-driven organizations.
